It is also a great stopping off point for any Island hoppers. Khao Lak is nicely situated between the east coast Islands (Koh Samui, Koh Phang Ngan & Koh Tao) and the West coast Islands (Koh Phi Phi, Phuket & more).
Khao Lak is close by to many natural wonders, national parks and of course the almost endless beaches heading from just north of Phuket Island all the way up to Ranong and the border of Myanmar. There are several ways of getting to Khao Lak, all of which are covered below.
The easiest way to get to Khao Lak is by plane. Krabi airport is not too far away but Phuket Airport is much nearer. The cheapest way is to get a bus, but you need to get to the main road first which is several kilometres away. You can arrange taxis from the airport but be prepared to haggle!

Travelling by bus has always been the best way to travel long distances in Thailand at a relatively cheap price. Even with the increase of budget airlines most Thais still use the extensive bus network to get around the country.
Almost everywhere in Thailand is accessible by bus and Khao Lak is no exception. Though it costs a little more, catching the night VIP bus is the ideal way to get to and from Khao Lak, saving on a night’s accommodation.
Bus travel during the day is a great way to soak up the local countryside.
Buses go to Khao Lak from the southern bus terminal (Sai Tai Mai). The trip takes about twelve hours and runs overnight. The most comfortable and reliable are the VIP buses.
It is possible to get a ticket for under 600 Baht but it is much better value to pay just under 1,000 baht for the VIP ticket. The chairs are much bigger and more comfortable. The bus will stop off around half way and it includes food and drinks. They will supply you with a blanket but it can be a good idea to bring warm clothing as they sometimes turn the aircon on to full blast!
Take a bus from Phuket Bus Station (Phuket Town) towards Takua Pa, Ranong or Surat Thani. A ticket will be less than 150 Baht.
There is a daily minibus service to Khao Lak. All travel agents in Krabi sell tickets, which are around 400 Baht.
