World-class Snorkelling

The close proximity of world-class snorkelling sites at the Similan Islands, Surin Islands and the increasingly popular Koh Tachai, make Khao Lak an excellent base for snorkelling day trips. The abundance of coral and marine life as well as the beautiful unspoiled beaches has resulted in a more family orientated day trip.

Tour operators offer mainly day trips, including transfer to and from customers’ resorts to the departure pier, speedboat transfer, lunch, sightseeing on the island and snorkelling at various sites. You can snorkel from the boat or, in some spots, directly from the beach. Speedboats usually carry between 30 and 40 passengers. The trips take approximately 75 minutes to the Similan Islands, Koh Tachai and the Surin Islands.

Snorkelling Trips from Khao Lak

Most Similan and Koh Tachai trips depart from the pier at Tab Lamu just 20 minutes south of Khao Lak. Surin Islands day trips leave from the other pier at Ban Nan Khem only 25 minutes north of Khao Lak. Operators can also arrange one, two or more nights stay in basic accommodation in bungalows or tents on either the Similan or Surin Islands.

The BEST way to explore the beautiful underwater world is on live-aboard trips just for snorkellers. That gives you more time to explore different sites, spend more time in the water and escape the crowds.

Snorkel with the Best Marine Life

The islands are all National Parks and the authorities close them for snorkelling and diving from the middle of May until middle of October each year. This allows the coral to recover and for maintenance to take place on the islands themselves.

You will see everything from tiny shrimps and clown fish to giant groupers and Napoleon Wrasse. You may see Turtles, Rays, Snappers and many other fish as well as beautiful coral and multi coloured anemones.
